I use a dedicated film scanner and I have autofocus, and if I want I can also manual focus. Yeah, that's seems to always be a problem with flatbed scanning. The colors are easily fixed in LR and/or PS. They were faded and less than sharp because of the ravages of time and the quality (lack thereof) of lenses 50 years ago. I just scanned some negs from a friend of mine from the 1960's, 50 years ago. Remember that they tend to fade and loose resolution over time. I get better sharpness from more recent slides/negs. Well I have a 9000f and the sharpness is so so but, it also depends on the age of the slides/negs. I have a Bowens Illumitron sitting in a closet for 30 years and I am tempted to use my 16mp Pentax K-5 with a Tamron 35->80 macro just to see what I can get. it detected a missing slide and didn't scan that area. I didn't think to put a blank slide holder in one of the four positions. My confusion is that I thought that 'calibration' means that it scans the small area at the bottom of the holder and delivers 'pure white' where a cloud is clear on the slide. All the first shots were obviously with a blue cast.after the prescan, I was able to set to colors +15C,-15M, and -30Y (as best I can remember, but may be in wrong order) and a white cloud looked white. I am using the more sophisticated scangear mode to use FARE and 4800dpi, recalibrate after each scan. I am daunted by the color balance and maybe I am off base. So far, I was not impressed with sharpness, but only used the factory holder. I have photolab cardboard mounts, plastic mounts and home mounted thicker plastic mounts, plastic w/anti-newton glass for the test.
